Memorizing the Quran

Assalamualaikum. For my first post, I would like to talk about memorizing the Holy Quran.

  1. Virtues
  • There is a great reward for just reading. Each letter is multiplied by ten in reward, so just in Alif Laam Meem, there is a reward of thirty good deeds. Now, if you memorize the Quran, apart from reading it, the reward keeps on multiplying and multiplying after constant repetition. Think about all  good deeds that will be in front of Allah on the Day of Judgment!

  • Uthmaan, may Allah be pleased with him, said that the Prophet (sallAllahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: The best of you are the ones who learn the Qur’an and teach it to others” [Al-Bukhari]   This Hadith shows the importance of learning and teaching the Quran. But to teach it, one would need to learn it. If someone does act upon this, then they are acting upon what the Prophet said. Not only are they acting upon the Prophet's words, but they will be the best of Muslims according to this Hadith.
2.     Resposibility
  • The main responsibility one should have when memorizing the Quran is if anything is memorized, never forget it. There is a punishment for forgetting the Quran, but there is no punishment for not memorizing the Quran. That is why many Quran teachers focus on review everything rather than memorizing new.
  • Also, everyone should respect the Quran. For example, not to put your feet above the Quran. Even though everyone, not just Hifz students, should respect the Quran, Hifz students should focus more on respecting the Book of Allah since they are the ones studying it and spend most of their time on it.
  • Last but not least, one should read the Quran with the proper pronunciation rules (tajweed) and with rhythm and reflect on the Ayat. Or else, how will people feel the power of the Quran if they just read fast to finish and show off how many times they read the Quran? This is Allah's Word, so it must be recited properly like the Prophet read it.

I just wanted to share a couple things about memorizing the Quran, but there are so many more things I could write about. Inshallah, I will try to write more soon.
